Presented by Oded Galor

at 16:00 BST, Online

The Structural Transformation and Economic Growth (STEG) programme is hosting the 2025 STEG Annual Special Lecture as part of its research initiative to better understand structural change, productivity, and growth in low- and middle-income countries.

STEG welcomes Professor Oded Galor (Brown University and CEPR) to present Roots of Growth and Inequality in the Wealth of Nations.

Abstract:
What sparked humanity’s extraordinary leap from stagnation to prosperity? What lies at the heart of the profound inequality observed among nations today? This lecture explores the evolution of societies across the entirety of human history, uncovering the forces that have shaped two fundamental mysteries: (i) The Mystery of Growth—the origins of the remarkable transformation in human prosperity over the past two centuries, following millennia of near stagnation; and (ii) The Mystery of Inequality—the deep historical roots underlying the vast disparities in nations' wealth. The analysis illuminates the pathways by which forces operating in the distant past continue to influence contemporary development, providing crucial insights for the design of policies aimed at fostering economic prosperity and mitigating inequality worldwide.

This lecture will be chaired by Professor Doug Gollin (Tufts University, Oxford University, and CEPR).
