We examine the historical and contemporary impacts of a coercive labour regime within the French colonial military conscription system in Mali. The study is motivated by the need to understand the long-term developmental legacies of colonial forced labour systems. The preliminary results suggest that historical coerced labour practices have long-lasting effects on local development, especially on education, in a context where formal schooling emerged as a product of colonialism.
