Despite political quotas, women’s representation in leadership positions, along with their input in policy formation, remains limited in Nepal. We conducted a large randomised controlled trial with half of the female ward members in Nepal to understand their aspirations for higher office, particularly ward chair, and their perceived challenges in actualising those aspirations. We find that informing female members about increased chances of their selection and election in non-quota-protected seats increases the probability that they vie for ward chair. However, while many female ward members applied for higher positions, parties rarely gave them a ticket.
