STEG Newsletter - July 2023

Dear All,

July was packed with many exciting updates - STEG's Fourth Larger Research Grants funding call is now open! We are also excited to share more details on the STEG Annual Conference and Theme Workshops, and to launch the Ideas for Transformation (I4T) series. On top of this, check out our newly published working papers which touch on trade exposure in Ugandaprice variation of retail firms in Tanzania, a theory of structural change and home production, and property rights in Senegal. Read about it below!

STEG and the Yale Research Initiative on Innovation and Scale (Y-RISE) invite applications to the fourth call for proposals for Larger Research Grants (LRGs) of up to £100,000. The deadline to apply is 19th September 2023, find more information below!

The proposals for the Sixth Small Research Grants Call and Fifth PhD Research Grants Call are now under evaluation, and we hope to give our applicants a decision by the end of August. Proposals from the Third & Fourth Ideas for Transformation Call have now been evaluated by external evaluators, and applicants can expect decisions by the end of August. We apologize for the delay in getting back to applicants.

This month we are delighted to announce the publication of the Ideas for Transformation (I4T) series! The first two Ideas of Transformation focus on trade barriers in Ghana and the school-to-work transition in Nigeria.

Lastly, we are thrilled to announce that STEG will host a dual-city Annual Conference and Theme Workshop week between New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) and the Barcelona School of Economics from 10th to 16th January 2024! The deadline for the call for papers is 7th September 2023, find more details are below.

Fourth Larger Research Grants (LRGs)

DEADLINE: 19th September 2023

STEG and the Yale Research Initiative on Innovation and Scale (Y-RISE) invite applications to the fourth call for proposals for Larger Research Grants (LRGs). This will be the final LRG call under the current STEG programme.

LRGs of up to £100,000* can fund research assistance, data collection and/or purchase, and teaching buyouts, or relevant remuneration practices, for the principal investigator and co-investigators from partner institutions.

🔎Research may focus on broad systemic patterns and processes of structural transformation and growth for low-income countries, in a comparative sense across time or space, or more narrowly defined topics related to one or more of the STEG themes.

💡We also welcome work that intersects with Y-RISE’s interest in understanding policy interventions at large scales, with particular attention to work aimed at expanding our knowledge on the effects of electrification.

🌍 We are particularly interested in research on sub-Saharan Africa, but research in middle-income countries will be considered if it informs growth processes or policies in low-income countries.

You can find more information on the STEG Website. The deadline for applications is 19th September 2023!

STEG Working Paper Series: NEW PAPERS

Four new papers have been published under the STEG Working Paper Series in July! Check them out below:

If you would like to submit your paper to the STEG Working Paper Series, please contact the STEG Team at [email protected].

Working papers that have been produced through STEG-funded projects are included in the series and we welcome papers from researchers directly affiliated with STEG as well as researchers' papers that have been presented at STEG-funded events including our Annual Conference and Theme Workshops.

The series is circulated widely through STEG’s network of researchers and policymakers in order that the results of the research receive thorough professional scrutiny and reach the hands of policymakers more quickly.

We look forward to collating more high-quality research under the STEG Working Paper Series as the STEG programme, and the research field more widely, progresses.

New STEG Ideas for Transformation (I4Ts)

This month we published the first two STEG Ideas for Transformation written by researchers in Ghana and Nigeria!

Ideas for Transformation (I4Ts) are brief and largely non-technical essays utilising country-specific expertise to identify a specific policy distortion, market failure, or other similar opportunity to promote inclusive growth and development in a particular country or context. Please get in touch if you are interested in collaborating with or extending these research agendas.
